Just Keep Reading…

It’s been one of those weeks where everything has just seemed sort of off. So as I approached my Tuesday/Wednesday deadline of a weekly devotion based on the 20+ chapters of Scripture I’ve read in the previous days without a message that seemed appropriate for this space, all I could tell myself was, “Just keep reading…”

So I did.

Yet still unsure regarding a message from a specific passage, and with my mind still freshly aware of The Story, I stepped back from the details and specifics to observe the big picture of all that I’ve been soaking in over the past few weeks.

And that’s when I saw it.

God’s love woven through each story and each person on the pages of Scriptures.

God’s love throughout the creation account.

God’s love to Noah, who was preserved through the flood because he found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

God’s love to the Israelites as they rebuilt the temple and restored their relationship and identity post exile.

God’s love to the prophet Nehemiah through answered prayer.

God’s love to the church as it spread and multiplied by the power of the Holy Spirit, even as it faced persecution.

God’s love to Paul through his powerful conversion and ministry.

God’s love to the apostles, the chosen twelve, as Christ walked with them, lived with them, and ministered to them.

God’s love to so many people who witnessed and experienced Christ’s wonders and miracles because of their faith.

God’s love in this as spoken in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch by Paul:

“Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.”

- Acts 13:38-39 (NIV)

It all comes back to this, doesn’t it? To Jesus Christ. To his sacrifice on the cross. Out of His perfect love. For us.

“Amazing love, how can it be? That you, my King, would die for me.

Amazing love, I know it’s true. It’s my joy to honor you.

In all I do, let me honor you.”

Sometimes, it’s all we can do to just keep reading, to soak in His love, His faithfulness, His goodness, and to remember all that He’s done.

Just keep reading…

{Day 20} Love God. Love People.

I first “felt called” (and yes, that is exactly how I would have said it) to missions in sixth grade. I was 12, I was growing in my faith, moving beyond understanding Christ only as my Savior to also experiencing the fullness of Christ as my Lord, I was beginning to develop a strong love for Scripture, I desired to share Christ with others, and I had just come across a short-term summer mission trip with a reputable missions organization.

The timing seemed perfect, and I was certain that the Lord had provided this specific opportunity for me to witness and minister to others – that this was part of THE call for my life, a stepping stone to a potential life on the mission field – and I really wanted to go.

Only one problem. My parents said “no”. With good reason, of course. I was 12. The trip was to a country in South America (my top three choices would have been listed on the application, though I also distinctly remember wanting to serve on the trip to the Dominican Republic). Although the missions organization was fairly well known, my parents weren’t very familiar with it. And the trip was about $1300.

I was hurt and angry because (in my 12 year old mind) my parents’ decision seemed completely irrational…not to mention they were standing in the way of God’s call, right? (Don’t worry, Mom, I now see the wisdom in that decision.) Eventually, I decided one roadblock wouldn’t be the end to my God-given call, so I kept praying about it (which I think my parents actually recommended) – all the while desperately seeking to do God’s will – and asked the Lord to confirm this call to missions.

While not going into great detail (at least not yet), in some way or another, I have been attempting to discern and/or confirm this calling ever since. I’ve been fascinated by those in Scripture who received clear and obvious calls, I’ve been interested in hearing stories of those around me who are certain of their calls, and I’ve repeatedly asked the Lord where and how He is leading. . .for the better part of 15 years.

And while He’s always been faithful to provide the next step in HIS time (which is rarely the same as MY time), it seems that much of what I’ve encountered over the years has been roadblock after roadblock. Every time I’ve thought “this is IT”, something has been in the way.

But although I haven’t always recognized it, thinking back to some of those times when my call (to a ministry organization, to a particular mission trip, to a specific person, to a life of service) has seemed most certain, there have always been two consistent factors that compelled me to the call in the first place and gripped me to the core:

Love God. Love People.

When it comes to understanding my call – whether that’s to pursue mission work vocationally at some point or not, whether all those roadblocks are a “no” or a “not yet” – maybe that’s enough. For now.

Sometimes discerning, understanding, and pursuing a {God given} call seems complicated and unknown. But when that call is stripped of the peripheral issues – the details, the worries, the plans, the fears – what’s left is simple and familiar.

“Jesus answered, ‘The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.’”

Mark 12:29-31 (ESV – emphasis added)

Fun Find: Love Poster

It has come to my attention that I have failed to post anything in my “fun find” category for over six months.  So that changes . . . right now.

But this is a different sort of fun find.

I have been following Shannan’s blog, Flower Patch Farmgirl, for some time now and absolutely love it!  She has a genuine and refreshing style and a beautiful heart.

Well about a month ago, for her blog’s two year anniversary, Shannon hosted a giveaway for an 11”x17” poster from Jerusalem Greer.  To enter, we simply had to check out Jerusalem’s etsy site, Jolly Goode, and leave a comment noting which poster we liked best (preferably providing a reason why).

So I left this comment:

My favorite is “Love has come to walk among us.”  It reminds me of the line from Michael W. Smith’s song “Anthem for Christmas” and that makes me think of the powerful message of “Emmanuel”!  Happy 2-year Anniversary!!

And I actually won!!!  I was SOOO excited!

Especially considering how much I love words (I’m pretty sure my Bible Study girls from college can vouch for this…) and recently I have become quite in love with art that revolves around words.

My evening-photos-in-bad-light do NOT do this poster justice.  It is a beautiful shade of red!

And to make it even sweeter, profits from Jerusalem’s etsy shop goes toward her family’s desire to adopt!  Love that!

A huge THANK YOU to both Shannan and Jerusalem for the giveaway/poster!!  I love it and cannot WAIT to frame it and get it up in my study!

Because…

Because it’s Monday…

Because there’s something about the simplicity of the above photo from the snow last week that makes me smile…

Because I have at least two more posts scheduled for this week (get excited!)…

Because I have officially completed Greek 1…

Because my heart and mind are full of thoughts that don’t yet make sense…

Because I needed to hear an encouraging word this morning, and maybe you do, too…

Because there’s nothing wrong with the familiar…

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors

through Him who loved us.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life,

neither angels nor demons,

neither the present nor the future,

nor any powers,

neither height nor depth,

nor anything else in all creation,

will be able to separate us

from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 8:37-39 (New International Version)

On this Monday, be convinced, be persuaded, be sure of God’s love and faithfulness!

Love More

I have sat across the sanctuary and watched as a vital member of the congregation flipped the pages of another member’s Bible to the proper passage and thought…that’s love.

I have heard of a friend encouraging and hugging a young child who was questioning his worth and thought…that’s love.

I have read the blogs of those serving (both short-term and long-term) in the missionfield around the world as they minister to children and families living in poverty situations that I can’t begin to understand and thought…that’s love.

Call it a personality trait, a learned behavior, or a sin (or some wicked combination of all three), but I have a horrible tendency to become judgmental and critical of those around me.  Often, with very little cause or provocation.

[This is the point in the conversation where you try to offer some consolation by assuring me that I am NOT the only one with this struggle.  At least I hope I’m not.]

But recently, I have yet again (you’d think I could get it the first – or tenth – time…) been made aware (or, dare I say, convicted) of how this tendency is without question UN-loving and UN-Christ-like.

In distinct contrast and opposition to this judgmental tendency is a selfless exhibit of love, which is simultaneously a command, a commitment, and a choice.  When it comes to our interactions with others (both inside and outside of the body of Christ, the Church), rather than standing in judgment, the Biblical imperative is to…

Love deeply.

“’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

There is no commandment greater than these.’”

Mark 12:30-31 (New International Version)

Love obediently.

“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.

As you have heard from the beginning,

his command is that you walk in love.”

2 John 6 (NIV)

Love sincerely.

“Love must be sincere.

Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.

Honor one another above yourselves.”

Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)

Love intentionally.

“Flee the evil desires of youth,

and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace,

along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

2 Timothy 2:22 (NIV)

Love completely.

“Do everything in love.”

1 Corinthians 16:14 (NIV)

Love MORE.

“Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you,

for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia.

Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so

more and more.”

1 Thessalonians 4:9-10 (NIV – emphasis added)
